When you factor in the leaves being still heavy on the trees, it's been a little slow to date, but at least the temperatures have been mostly pleasant. I'm headed out to an OMCBA field trial in New Albany, MS this weekend at the Union County Fairgrounds, and hopefully the hunting conditions up that way will be more favorable! Mark.
I headed back over to Kings Point Island Friday evening to finish out the season with Scotty and Dale Bridges. In spite of the hot (75 degrees) temperatures Friday night, we managed to knock out two ringtails to the dogs. We had a couple of very nice squirrel hunts Saturday, totalling about 19 for the day, and let several get away. Saturday night, however, was a bust with the 20+ mph winds and wind chill down around 20 degrees! Here's a photo of Scotty, his dog Woody, Dale with Deuce and our squirrels from Saturday! Mark.
We made a round up North of my home last night. My nephew and I met Steven Chamblee and his dog, Buddy, at Mark Kennedy's camp and wound up knocking out 2 coons to the dogs. It was a fine place and beautiful night, just wish we could've stayed out later! Mark.
With the season winding down in a hurry, I decided to make a short round last night. The first drop was mighty slow, but the second ended in a hurry with this sow coon! Mark.
Several of us traveled back down to Giles Island this past week to assist the LSU Ag Center with their efforts to raise funds for the 4-H programs in the State of Louisiana. This has become an annual event, drawing a good number of folks at a most excellent facility. All in all, I think we harvested approximately 175 fox squirrels, and thus the participants/donors got in plenty of shooting! Thanks again to the LSU Ag Center and Giles Island for sponsoring this very worth while event! Mark.
Not me and my son, but Apache and his, TWO. I took them, my nephew and a buddy, Carl Bain, on a hunt last night in Ludlow, MS. Papa, Apache, has still got it, and while his son is making progress this season, he's still got a ways to go before he can best his old man! Mark.
My buddy, Scotty Bridges, invited me over for a coon and squirrel hunt at his camp Saturday night and Sunday morning. We had some good huntin', food and fellowship. Pictured above is Scotty, two of his dogs, and our "catch" during our two trips to the woods: 3 coon, 14 squirrels. Mark.
I made a few rounds in the woods this weekend with Carl Bain and Steven Chamblee. While the squirrel hunting was pretty slow, the coon hunting tended to be a little better. Now that the weather has gotten back to more like "normal" for this time of year, I'm hoping to make a few more rounds this week at night. Mark.
Carl, a fella I met through the MDWFP website, came out to the house last night to meet me for another hunt this week. Our first trip to Pearl River WMA Tuesday night, during the full moon, was a bust. With the temps so low last night, and the water still so high at my camp on the Pearl River, I was less than optimistic when we headed out again last night. However, "TWO" (Mtn. St. Apache II) struck and treed this old sow in fine fashion and Carl got to knock out his first coon! I suspect we ain't seen the last of Carl, especially since he now wants to make a few rounds in the squirrel woods with the dogs! Mark.
Here are a couple more pictures from my hunts over the holidays. These were taken in the MS Delta at Twin Oaks WMA. I'm headed back that way this weekend, in hopes that the water levels are down enough to get in a few hunts! Mark.
Over the Holidays, I had a chance to hit the woods several times with friends, in between the crazy weather, both locally and in the Delta. We managed to have a few good hunts in spite of all the water and generally warm temperatures. Mark.
After making a short coon hunt at Pearl River WMA Saturday night, I decided to deliver our take personally to my buddy in town. While I've eaten a few coons over the years, I really prefer to simply hunt them with my dogs. However, I don't let them go to waste as my buddy and his family are glad to have each and all of them that I give them, especially around the holidays, when family and friends gather in their neighborhood. To me, its a perfect match, allowing us all to benefit! Mark.
After eating entirely too much, my nephews and I decided to make a coon hunt up at my camp on the Pearl River. Stuart, the oldest, was home for Thanksgiving break from Texas A & M where he is a sophomore. Mike, the younger, is in his senior year in high school and lives with me full time, at least for the remainder of this school year. We lucked up and got on this ole boar coon as soon as we turned out the dogs (Mindy & TWO). They run him a good ways, and eventually treed him at the edge of our main camp road. With rain forecasted for later that evening, we called it a night and ended on a high note! Mark.
My Dad and I don't get together for hunts as much as I'd like, but he and Mom came down early for Thanksgiving this year and camped out at Leroy Percy State Park. I met them up there Friday evening, and Dad and I made a couple of rounds in the woods. We didn't have any luck spotting a coon Friday night, and it was mighty windy Saturday morning, but we managed to knock a few out to Mindy Saturday afternoon before quitting at 4:00 p.m. and getting cleaned up for dinner reservations at Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, MS! Mark.
I went over the Delta and hunted with my buddy, Joey Thompson, in the squirrel woods. While the hunting was slower than normal, we still managed to knock a few squirrels out to the dogs on both Twin Oaks and Sunflower WMA's. Not content to sit around the house yesterday evening, my nephew, Mike, and I decided to made a round in the coon woods up at our camp on the Pearl River, and enjoyed a little success before the night was over. I can't wait for the leaves to drop off these tall river bottom hardwood trees! I suspect the rain forecasted for mid-week will go a long way towards that end! Mark.
Harold Robison, Jr. and Ken Kirkland from S.E. Alabama drove up this past weekend, choosing to make one of their annual out of state trips to the Delta, instead of Missouri or Michigan. And so far, I think they've been pleased with their decision. We had a few nice hunts on our local Delta WMA's and they'll be staying at my camp the rest of the week, with what looks like great squirrel hunting weather. Here are a few photos from our Friday afternoon and Saturday morning hunts. Mark.
Terry Fletcher and I took a new hunter to our sport, Jeremy Wilson, on a coon hunt last night near Sandhill, MS. Terry's dog, Tim, put on quite a nice show, treeing several coons in about 2 hours. Tim got a little help from Terry's other dog, Sadie, and my TWO male. We were able to get in a nice little productive hunt before the rain began to set in, getting me home and in bed by a little after 11:00 p.m. I'm really looking forward to the cooler temperatures projected for this weekend in our state. There are two fellas coming up from Southeast Alabama tomorrow morning to hunt with me all weekend in the Mississippi Delta, so hopefully we'll get into some squirrels with these cooler temperatures! Mark.
I traveled to the Delta Friday evening to meet up with a buddy of mine from North Mississippi, Chad Smith, and his newest acquisition, Riverwood P.J. While our coon hunt was a "bust," with several trees but no coons shined, we struck out again for 2 squirrel hunts back at Twin Oaks WMA the next morning. We were met by two more buddies, Ryan and Nate, who were more than eager to help us search for these bushytails in the tall, leafy timber. We wound up with 5 reds, 3 blacks and 2 grays on the day, which wasn't too bad a start to the season here in the Central Zone. Pictured are me, with my black brindle male, Mtn. St. Apache II, and Chad Smith with P.J. Mark.
Me and two buddies, Terry and Shawn, went coonhunting last night at the Latham Farm in Ludlow, MS. We made a few trees, didn't have to fight too many mosquitos, and finally got this coon to look at us. If all goes according to plan, we're gonna make a couple more hunts this weekend together, starting tonight. We're all looking forward to Squirrel Season opening next weekend in the Central Zone! Mark.
I got together with a couple of my friends, Todd Pounds and Joey Thompson, and made a few hunts this past weekend in the Mississippi Delta. We began with a coonhunt Friday night at Twin Oaks WMA, made a few trees and knocked out 2 coons to the dogs. We got up early Saturday morning and made a squirrel hunt at Leroy Percy WMA and wound up with several squirrels before the skeeters ran us out of the woods. We hunted again, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but wound up with less squirrels and even more skeeters! All in all, it was very productive and enjoyable opening weekend. Mark.
With the temperatures at night recently down in the 50's & 60's, its been a welcomed relief during some of our coon hunts here in Central Mississippi. I went out Friday and Saturday nights with mixed results. Friday, we had a good hunt and knocked one out to the dogs. Saturday night seemed much slower, and without any company other than the dogs, it made for a long evening with few barks. Regardless, it was time well spent getting ready for the Fall Season and I sure look forward to the leaves eventually falling off the trees! Mark.
My nephew, Mike, and I, along with two hunting buddies, made the long trip this past weekend to Jamestown, TN to participate in the Annual Fall Hunt. Mindy was the only dog to place in both the Squirrel and Coon Hunts, and thus earning her yet another Combination Dog Award. For now, its time to put away the scorecards and stop-watch and get ready for the upcoming squirrel season which is just around the corner. If all goes according to plan, we'll be headed to the Mississippi Delta October 3rd to start the season the following day in the Northern Zone!
Mark.
I went with two of my buddies, Terry and Joe, for a round in the woods at their Deer Camp this past Saturday morning. We made several trees and looked at a coon and 3 squirrels, which wasn't bad with all the leaves on the trees this time of year. Here's a photo of all three dogs treed on a squirrel. As you can see, there was no shortage of standing water in the woods, and thus, the skeeters were Most Plentiful too! Mark.
It's been a while since I've posted on my Blog, but as most of you know, squirrel season is just around the corner. So in order to keep me and the dogs from going crazy over the Summer, I've been doing a good bit of Summer coonhunting since the season opened in July. Here are a few photos of some of my more recent hunts in and around Scott/Leake Counties. I've also been running the dogs in the daytime at my camp and elsewhere in close proximity to the Pearl River, getting ready for the upcoming season, and more immediately, a field trial in Tennessee later this month. I've got a nice trip planned this coming weekend, assuming the weather cooperates, when I'll be headed over the King's Point Island with my buddy, Scotty Bridges, to do a little more coonhunting. The photo on the top is of some new hunting buddies and their young hounds, as well as my female Mtn. Cur, Mindy, after a nice night outside of Carthage. On the bottom is my nephew, Mike Foster, and Kenny Latham's soon to be son-n-law, Shawn, after a successful night at the Latham farm in Ludlow, MS. Y'all take care! Mark.
Saturday night, we met up with some new hunting partners, Tim and John Mark, at their hunting camp just North of Hwy 16 for a coonhunt. We, including my nephew, Mike, and hunting buddy from NW Arkansas, Brent Wood, arrived just before dark and made two drops and wound up with 3 coons. I suspect it may not be the last time Tim and John Mark join us for a hunt as I think they enjoyed themselves. Too bad the season is nearly over, but hopefully we can make a few rounds next year! Thanks again fellas for inviting us on such a fine hunt! Mark.
